Wedding photographer finds her way to give back

Al Lesar, Shopper News

Little did Sarah (Grim) Edens know that her dance background in high school and middle school would help her in her chosen profession.

“I loved to dance in school,” the Powell native said. “Hip-hop was my favorite, but I also liked lyrical.”

Fast forward several years, and Edens is a professional photographer working a wedding.

“When I’m working a wedding, I’m there to help the bride and groom,” said Edens. “You can’t bend over in a wedding dress. If a bride needs help with her shoes, I’ll help. If a bride needs help with her train, I’ll help. I can be her go-to girl.”

This time, though, Edens went above and beyond.

“I was at the reception and there was nobody on the dance floor,” Edens recalled. “The bride and groom came up to me and asked if I’d put down my camera and dance with them, hoping to encourage others to get out there.

“I’ll get out there and bust a move. If that’s what they wanted, I’ll do it.”

That’s a big reason why Sarah Edens Photography has flourished since she hung out her shingle in 2019.

Creating memories

There was a time, when Edens was in Powell High School (a 2016 graduate), that she felt destined to be a nurse.

“I wanted to serve and care for people,” said Edens. “I was good in science. Nursing seemed to be the place for me.”

Until … that athletic training class at Pellissippi State Community College.

“I was trying to wrap an ankle and I was just getting frustrated,” she recalled. “I remember the professor saying, ‘Maybe this isn’t for you.’

“He might have been referring to the athletic training class, but I took it as my plan for nursing in general. I remember thinking, ‘I don’t think this is how I was meant to serve.’”

The turn to art — more specifically photography — was drastic but comfortable.

“It’s like a light bulb went off,” Edens said. “I grew up in the digital age. Photography was a way to create memories. I like to be creative with the photos I shoot.

“Like a wedding dress, every couple is different. I like to get to know them and know what they’re looking for out of their wedding.”

Party every Saturday

Edens shoots high school senior portraits, family portraits, newborns and business photos, but weddings are her bread and butter.

She averages about two weddings a month, but this summer had a stretch of seven consecutive Saturdays leading up to her own nuptials in July.

“It’s like having a party every Saturday,” Edens said.

Edens said she let her fiancé, Matt, choose their own wedding photographer. He chose Sarah Moser, who knew Matt through church and also mentored Sarah.

Edens said the art of the business should not get lost on the ease of a point-and-shoot pre-set camera.

“My advice (for someone breaking into the business) would be to get a camera, it doesn’t have to be fancy,” she said. “Learn the F-stops and shutter speed. Know the ins and outs of it. Research it. That’s how you can become creative.”
