Mysuru: As the state government has set the dates to conduct mass marriages under the Saptapadi Scheme, Chamundi Hill temple authority, has decided to invite fresh applications. As per the state government notification, mass marriages under the scheme will be conducted on April 28, May 11 and May 25. As documents, age and other details of the applicants must be verified, the Chamundi Hill temple authority will conduct the mass marriage from next month.

The scheme, introduced two years ago, could not be launched fully due to the pandemic. The muzrai department had planned to conduct around 2,000 mass marriages in every temple, but was not able to reach the target owing to the pandemic.

However, amid the pandemic-induced restrictions on visitors to the temple, as many as 14 marriages were in Chamundi Hill temple and 17 at Srikanteshwara temple last year in Mysuru district.

Under the scheme, couples entering wedlock will be given benefits worth Rs 55,000, including an 8 gram gold mangalsutra, Rs 10,000 for the bride and Rs 5,000 for the bridegroom. The couple from SC/ST communities will receive a bond worth Rs 50,000 from the social welfare department. The tender of manufacturing mangalsutras has been given to the state-owned Cauvery Emporium.

Speaking to TOI, Chamundi temple muzrai tahsildar Yathiraju said the government had directed the temple authorities to relaunch the Saptapadi scheme from April 28. “But the temple authority is not ready to conduct the event as fresh applications must be invited after taking the necessary permission from deputy commissioner,” he said.

Ceremonies will be held from next month in the Chamundi Hill temple and other muzrai ‘A’ grade temple like Srikanteshwara temple in Nanjangud, Mudukuthore temple in T Narasipura taluk and M M Hills temple in Hanur taluk of Chamarajanagar district.
