One of the most prized treasures of Cork's tourism sector has fallen under the control of that lot from the Kingdom.

The owners of Sheens Falls Lodge in Kenmare have bought the 5-Star Castlemartyr Resort in East Cork, famous as one of the country's most celebrated wedding venues.

The purchase - for an undisclosed sum - has been made by Singapore-based partners Dr. Stanley Quek and Peng Loh.

They have an extensive portfolio of hotels and resorts worldwide and Castlemartyr is the third addition to their Irish roster, which is HQ'd in Kerry.

The sale is expected to be good news for Castlemartyr and the 250 full-time staff there as the Singapore/Kerry group have invested big in their two Irish properties bought to date.

Castlemartyr Resort has won multiple awards as a wedding venue and hotel. Opened in 2007, it has a historic, 17th century manor house at its heart as well as a spa, fitness centre, conference facilities and golf course.

Included in the purchase of Castlemartyr Resort and within the grounds are 38 self-catering cottages and lodges, a mix of two and three-bedroom properties which are popular with families and golfers.

The new owners say a major investment programme is now planned to refurbish the common areas, bedrooms and grounds starting with the Manor House to elevate its elegant interiors with contemporary comforts.

The refurbishment will be influenced by the same design philosophy of Sheen Falls Lodge and Trinity Townhouse that mixes architectural elements with modern detailing to create a sophisticated and relaxed environment.

Commenting on the purchase, Dr. Stanley Quek said: “We are very excited to be the new owners of Castlemartyr Resort.
