Thomas Hind decided to win the hearts of his future wife and lied a white lie to ensure he would dance at Irvine’s Ritz nearly 70 years ago.

There, Thomas, who was late for the mining job, told the doorman at Irvine Dancehall that he was with the band to meet Isabella.

That was their first dance date, and seven years later they got married at King Street Church in Kilmarnock on September 22, 1961.

He moved to Irvine and had two daughters, Elizabeth and Angela. Angela has become an assistant coach for the Scotland national football team and currently lives in Virginia.

However, this close family keeps in touch with their daughters and grandchildren, Ainsley and Kiel daily.

“Our family is everything to us. They bring us great joy,” Isabella smiled.

And Thomas may have the secret to a happy marriage – two birthday cards.

“If you buy one for a year, you get one for free, so I sent you two. It’s been the case ever since,” explained Thomas.
