Police officers came to the rescue of a bride on her big day after she was forced to hitchhike when her wedding car broke down on a busy highway in the UK.

Lydia Evans-Hughes needed police help to get her to the altar after the vintage car she was taking to the church broke down. She had been on her way to the venue with her parents Yvette and Alan Fletcher when the car gave up.

But the bride was in luck as traffic officers arrived at the scene and Inspector Matt Geddes made sure she got to the church on time.

Evans-Hughs told SWNS that the vintage car had been "fine for the first five miles" before it "just gave up the ghost."

"I was worried I'd have to climb over the crash barrier and be left stood at the side of the road," she added.

However, traffic officers soon arrived at the scene.

"They saw it was a wedding car and offered us a lift," Evans-Hughs said. "That was the first time in the day that I had tears of relief."

Inspector Matt's gesture meant she made a more dramatic bridal entrance than usual and the bridal party arrived in a police car, while the guests, and her husband-to-be, Tidur Evans-Hughes, 31, waited.

"He asked how much of an entrance we wanted to make and my dad said a big one," Evans-Hughs said.

The COVID pandemic had already delayed their nuptials twice and the blue-light arrival on August 26 made the ceremony even more memorable.
